The film follows amateur yachtsman Donald Crowhurst (Firth)'s disastrous attempt to complete the 1968 Golden Globe round-the-world boat race. Burdened by financial troubles, Crowhurst enters the race in the hope of winning a cash prize which he intends to use as a lifeline for his failing business.
