Humble clerk Sosuke is married to Oyone. But she was once married to another man - now the couple's adultery hangs over them like a curse. When Oyone's ex-husband returns to the neighbourhood, their melancholy peace is broken. Sosuke flees to a temple, hoping to trade failure for enlightenment. But even this grand gesture may be doomed to fizzle out, in this poignantly ironic classic of modern Japanese fiction.
